ABA - AB AEROTRANSPORT
SWEDISH AIR LINES

This is a page devoted to ABA, the Swedish airline that became one of the three predecessors to SAS.
The page is primarily based on my postcard collection but other artifacts have been used as well.

A main source has been the book "På säkra vingar/ABA under 20 års lufttrafik".
This book was published 1944 to commemorate 20 years of ABA air traffic (1924-1944).
Translation of the book title is "On secure wings/20 years of ABA air traffic".

HISTORY

The first regular ABA flight with passengers took place on June 2 1924 between Stockholm and Helsinki.
The flight was made by a sea plane and started from the seaport at Lindarängen in Stockholm.

The first of July 1924 the route between Malmö and Hamburg was also started.

ABA (AB Aerotransport) was founded on March 27 1924 by two brothers,
military airmen Carl and Adrian Florman.

ROUTE NETWORK

COMMERCIAL TRAFFIC

The following routes were flown by ABA before WWII.
The year indicates the starting date of a particular route.

***

1924: Stockholm-Helsinki-Stockholm

The 3 first years (1924-1926) this was a route for the summer period as sea planes were used. Neither Stockholm nor Helsinki had at this time landbased airports. 1931 the aircrafts started to make a intermediate stop at Turku (Åbo). 1934 some were even extended to Tallinn.

The aircrafts used the 3 first years were one-motor Junker aircrafts that carried only 4 passengers. 1927-1931 the traffic was conducted with 3-motor aircarfts that could carry 9 passengers. From 1932 12 passengers planes were used.

Not until Bromma airport was ready 1936 land planes could be used for the route.

1924: Malmö-Hamburg-Malmö

1925: Malmö-Hamburg-Amsterdam-Hamburg-Malmö

1925: Malmö-Berlin-Malmö

1926: Malmö-Copenhagen-Gothenburg

1931: Malmö-Copenhagen-Amsterdam

1935: Stockholm-Mariehamn-Stockholm

1937: Stockholm-Malmö-Amsterdam-London-Amsterdam-Malmö-Stockholm

1937: Stockholm-Riga-Moscow-Riga-Stockholm

1937: Oslo-Gothenburg-Copenhagen-Gothenburg-Oslo

1937: Stockholm-Visby-Stockholm

SCANDINAVIAN AIR EXPRESS

Was a cooperation between ABA and KLM to ensure smooth connections between Scandinavia-Paris and Scandinavia-London, routed via Amsterdam.

AIR MAIL TRAFFIC

ABA had during the years some aircrafts that were only used for mail flights. Both the Delta (SE-ADI) and the Gamma (SE-ADW) from Northrop were such planes. Also the Junkers JU-86 (SE-AEF) was a mail aircraft.
This is the period 1933-1940.

Already 1928 ABA was involved in the five experimental air mails flight Stockholm-London-Stockholm that were conducted.

Of course ABA transported mail already from the beginning and through the years using their schduled passengers flights. But, the real use for air delivered mail was to use the nights for transport. One example was the mail route Stockholm (Barkarby)-Malmö-Hannover starting I think already around 1930. The traffic was moved to Bromma 1936.

FLIGHT REPORT POSTCARDS

These postcards are kind of a PR postcard.
They show information about the current flight and a passenger could send this postcard to someone showing what he/she have experienced.

This Flight Report is issued for a flight with ABA's DC-3 "Örnen", SE-BAA".

Cancelled: June 10 1938

The postcard is sent from Paris on June 10 1938.

No date nor time is given in the flight report so it's difficult to exactly tell the flight number.

Since the card is sent from Paris, it's likely that the passengers first flew with ABA to Copenhagen, and then continued with Air France or KLM. In that case the flight number between Stockholm and Copenhagen was 215, leaving Stockholm at 12:00, arriving in Copenhagen 14:15.

This postcard is from ILIS 1936.
SE-ACK is the smaller (to the right) of the two sea planes at Lindarängens seaport in Stockholm.
The other aircraft is Södermanland SE-ADR.

ILIS (Internationella Luftfartsutställningen I Stockholm) was held between May 15 and June 1 1936. The exposition was held to celebrate the opening of Bromma airport, Europe's first with paved runways.

Bromma airport was inaugerated May 23 1936.

Translation of the postcard title is:
"Captain Ahrenberg's Greenland Aircraft over Stockholm".

1931, when polar explorer A. Courtauld, was missing, SE-ACK was used by the search party piloted by captain Albin Ahrenberg. Courtauld was found, food was thrown down to him, and Ahrenberg had fulfilled his mission. The aircraft was flown to Iceland and transported back to Sweden by boat.

1938 the aircraft was bought by Ahrenberg who used is a sight-seeing aircraft around Sweden. In 1940 the aircraft was sold to Finland.

ABA flew in total 20 Douglas DC-3 aircrafts. They were however bought diferent yeras.
The three first ones were bought 1937, followed by additonal two in 1939 (bought lost at flights during the WWII - 1943).
After the WWII had ended ABA bought 15 more DC-3s 1945-1946, all war surplus planes.

18 of the planes (as two were lost 1943) were transfered to SAS 1948.

JUNKERS G-24 SE-AABG/SE-ABG UPPLAND

SE-AABG Uppland was delivered in May 1927 from Junkers Flugzeugwerk in Dessau, Germany.
In September 1932 Uppland was given back to Junkers (used as a pertial payment) when Södermanland SE-ADR was bought.

In the summers Uppland was used as a sea plane on the route Stockholm-Helsinki-Stockholm. In the winters it was used as land plane on the route Malmö-Hamburg-Amsterdam-Hamburg-Malmö.

In June 1928 Uppland took part in the rescue expedition for the crew of the airship Italia, lost on its way to the North Pole.
The pilot of Uppland was Viktor Nilsson. He flew from Tromsö (Norway) to Spitsbergen in 6 hours and 10 minutes. It was the first time this particular route over the Arctic Ocean was flown without intermediate stops.

JUNKERS JU-52 SE-ADR SÖDERMANLAND

SE-ADR Södermanland was delivered in August 1932 from Junkers Flugzeugwerk in Dessau, Germany.
In service until May 1947 when it was sold to Albin Ahrenberg.

Södermanland was one of the first manufactured airplanes of the the famous JU-52 series.
It could take 16 passengers and could be used both as sea and land plane. At the time it was one of the best sea planes in the world for its size.
It was used by ABA in summer months as sea plane between Stockholm and Helsinki.
The rest of the year SE-ADR was used as land plane between Malmö and Amsterdam.

When Bromma airport was opened in 1936 the traffic between Stockholm and Helsinki was taken over by other land planes. Södermanland was then used as sea plane on the routes Stockholm-Visby and Stockholm-Mariehamn-Åbo.

A number of special flights were also conducted.
